David Young: GEC's 2023 Salesperson of the Year
Gas Equipment Company proudly announces David Young as the Salesperson of the Year for 2023. David's exceptional performance throughout the year earned him the Salesperson of the Year title, marked by the highest sales percentage to budget in the LPG segment.
David's journey with GEC began in July 2012, leveraging his extensive industry experience and his ability to build long lasting customer relationships. Reflecting on his journey, David shared, “When I started working in the propane industry, I took a nickel per hour pay cut thinking maybe I could make a career out of it, and here we are almost 5 decades later!" Starting with propane delivery, David's dedication and hard work led him to his first management position within six years. Throughout his career, he honed his skills and expertise, spending most of his retail propane years working for Darrel Urban at Midwestern Propane in Belleville, IL.
For the past 12 years at GEC, David has excelled in his role, drawing on his retail propane experience to become an outstanding outside sales representative. His deep understanding of his customers' needs, combined with his extensive product knowledge, has been pivotal in his success.
David's commitment to his customers goes beyond business; it's about building lasting relationships. He shared, “The one thing I didn't see coming when I started with GEC was that I would become friends with so many of my customers. Through the years I have seen their children grow up to become adults. I truly enjoy my work life!"
In addition to his exemplary work at GEC, David is actively involved in industry associations. He has served on the MOPERC board in Missouri and currently serves on the IPGA Board in Illinois, demonstrating his dedication to the propane industry. Outside of work, David enjoys spending time with his wife, daughter, and stepdaughter. He is passionate about nature and spends his weekends on outdoor projects, cooking delicious meals on his gas grills, and participating in water sports. His love for outdoor activities also extends to running 5k races, in 2023 alone David completed six 5k runs!
GEC Central Regional Manager, Steve Clayton, shared a fun story about David, “Years ago, we were at a regional industry meeting watching the competition fidgeting across the room and David made a stirring motion with his hands, grinning. Later he said, “I like to stir the pot a bit” and we laughed.”
Over the years David quietly builds relationships with customers into the GEC family that pay dividends for customers and company alike. In a competitive environment with ever-evolving customer demands, David's integrity, knowledge, and dedication shine through, earning him the respect of both customers and colleagues. At Gas Equipment Company, David Young is not just a salesperson; he's a valued member of the family, whose contributions continue to drive the company's success.
